City of Windom UPDATES

Saturday- June 29, 2024

City of Windom, MN

PIO Press Release 6-29-2024 – 6:00 PM

Update from the City of Windom Mayor Dominic Jones

Sunday, June 30 debris drop off hours have changed. The Cottonwood County Debris Dump Site in the West Parking Lot at Windom Area High School will now be open 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM or until filled on Sunday, June 30. In addition, the Cottonwood County Landfill will be open from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM.

We appreciate everyone’s understanding and flexibility as we accommodate changing needs. Community members have been diligent about promptly removing flood debris and damaged items from their homes. Neighbors have also been diligently volunteering to help each other clean out these items. Because incoming material exceeded expectations, the Dump Site hours have been reduced to allow additional time for Hometown Sanitation staff to empty containers.

The Cottonwood County Landfill has adjusted their hours to accommodate. They will now be open from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM tomorrow Sunday, June 30. We appreciate their flexibility! We would also like to thank Hometown Sanitation for their continued support and assistance. The Dump Site could not happen without their commitment to the community.

In addition, we would like to announce that Cottonwood County has received a Presidential Disaster Declaration. This means that Public Assistance (PA) is available to aid in our public response. This funding will cover eligible disaster-related City, County, and State expenses at 100% (75% from the Federal government and 25% from the State of Minnesota).

PIO Press Release 6-29-2024 – 9:30AM

Update from the City of Windom Mayor Dominic Jones

After having gone through a flooding disaster, it is humbling how the Windom area
community has shown up for their friends, family, and neighbors. The Emergency Operations
Center is grateful for all the work of our many volunteers in the community.
Unless there are any major changes through the weekend, the Emergency Operations
Center will not be meeting on tomorrow, Sunday, June 30 so there will not be an update.

There are several updates to share with the community today.

Landfill/Dump Site Hours
Hours at the Cottonwood County Landfill are 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM today Saturday, June 29.
The landfill will be closed tomorrow Sunday, June 30.
The Cottonwood County Debris Dump Site in West Parking Lot at Windom Area High
School is open today and tomorrow for drop-offs 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM. This site has been
expanded with additional bins and is anticipated to be open through July 20.

Disaster Declaration
The State of Minnesota has recommended that President Biden issue a Presidential
Disaster Declaration. The Governor and all Minnesota US Representatives and Senators are
urging the President for urgent action. We await response on this currently.

Damage Assessments
Property owners should retain pictures of all damage and removed debris. Damage
assessments are occurring throughout the community by the Red Cross and City of Windom
staff. We recognize that this is a vulnerable time for many property owners to allow
assessment of their property. However, these assessments are necessary for the County to
apply for FEMA to offer Individual Assistance funds to property owners. We appreciate your
assistance with getting aid to you and your neighbors.
The Red Cross assessors wear red vests identifying themselves.

Cleanup Hotline
For homeowners needing assistance with clean-up efforts, please complete a report with
the Minnesota Flooding Cleanup Hotline at 218-228-2213. This hotline does not guarantee
service and takes several minutes to complete. This hotline will put your information on a log
that is accessible by disaster relief organizations and groups in the community. At this time,
addresses are being actively served within 1-2 days by organizations and groups in the
community.

Windom Flood Relief Fund
Windom Area Foundation has graciously established a Windom Flood Relief Fund to help
support the community. More details and information will be released in the coming weeks
regarding eligibility and how to apply for funding. There are multiple ways to donate. Checks
can be mailed or dropped off at Bank Midwest. Donations can also be made at
bit.ly/windomfloodrelief through an easy online portal.

Sandbags
Sandbags must remain in place. Sandbags are contaminated and should not be repurposed
for personal or commercial use. Sandbag disposal plans will be forthcoming.
Roads
The County Road 15 bridge is open by the Golf Course now. All other County road closures
remain in place currently. Water levels are receding and roads will continue to be re-opened
as safety permits.

Water Conservation
Water conservation remains important. The community has been doing a great job on this
continued need so far. We appreciate your commitment to helping conserve water!
