In a deal that was supposed to be finalized Friday, a new hearing has been set to approve the sale of the Hylife Foods Windom facility, its real estate, furniture, fixtures, and equipment to Premium Iowa Pork LLC as both companies are still completing the final paperwork. The rescheduled court hearing to approve the sale is Friday, June 9th at 10am. Premium Iowa Pork LLC doesn’t intend to keep current employees at Hylife Foods in Windom, but Hylife is working with the Minnesota Dislocated Worker program and will have a rapid response team to offer career counseling, resources, and job search help to those effected by the sale.
The City of Windom has started mosquito fogging to try and control the excessive amount of mosquitoes in-town. The City of Windom will mostly fog for mosquitoes on Thursday nights with a potential of Tuesdays if conditions call for it or because of the weather.
Jon Ketzenberg with the Windom Streets and Parks Department says while Biomist, the chemical they use for mosquito fogging is effective in helping to control mosquitoes and other insects, there are a few major downsides to using the chemical. First, the chemical is very toxic to aquatic organisms, including fish and invertebrates and highly toxic to bees whether through direct contact or on blooming crops or weeds. And second, Biomist is expensive, costing $5,101 per 55-gallon drum which Katzenberg says the city can get about 3 foggings done per drum.
Ketzenberg also recommends that people and pets, especially children, be indoors while the city is mosquito fogging because the chemical is just as dangerous to humans and pets as it is to aquatic life and bees.
The City of Windom will fog for mosquitoes every Thursday in June unless the wind is more than 15 mph, it’s raining or misting, or if the air temperature is below 50 degrees at night.
