Redwood County Sheriff’s Office reported on May 4th at approximately 6:35pm a 14-year-old girl was injured in Walnut Grove when the vehicle she was driving lost control in 700 Block of Main St in Walnut Grove. The juvenile female was driving a Chevrolet Hatchback on County Road 5 in Walnut Grove, when she lost control and struck a double axle trailer which collided with a brick building. The cars airbags deployed and the driver was seen running away from the vehicle. The Juvenile was located and transported to the Westbrook Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Assisting on scene were the Walnut Grove ambulance and Fire Department, Lamberton Ambulance and Minnesota State Patrol. This crash remains under investigation with the Redwood County Sheriff’s Department. Charges are pending on the Juvenile female for possible burglary/theft.

Windom Fire Chief Ben Derickson reported Windom Fire was paged on the 4th for a controlled burn that had jumped the fence and got out of control. Derickson explained that Mountain Lake Fire Department was doing a controlled burn on some grass land at 49882 County Road 17 just east of Windom about a half mile. They started the control burn at 7:35pm. At 10:08pm Derickson stated Windom was paged and on scene at 10:10pm to put the fire out. Windom Fire cleared the scene at 11:42pm. Derickson went on to state, there was no property damage or injuries.

The Windom Area Health Governing Board will be holding a special meeting Tonight at 5pm at the Cottonwood County Historical Society. Dr Michael Fischer will be the Facilitator of this public meeting. The purpose of this meeting will be to present a plan for a new two-story Medical Office Building connected to Windom Area Health that would potentially house outreach services, mental health and a new wellness area.

The Windom City Council has set a special meeting on Tuesday, May 9th at 4:30pm. There are two action items for the agenda: the Board of Review and a resolution requesting State Assistance. The resolution cites the announcement on April 11th of the potential shutdown of HyLife Foods Pork Production Plant on June 1st if a buyer for the facility is not found, as the reason for the request. The proposed resolution states, “There will be a loss of over 1,007 jobs within the community that will have devasting impact to the local economy, school district, and countless families within the community and surrounding area.” The request will be for $18 million dollars from the State of Minnesota, the resolution states, “These monies will be utilized, at the discretion of the  City, for reducing wastewater treatment plant debt with the Minnesota  Public Facilities Authority amounting to $6,500,000; $1,000,000 for  transitional aid to the Windom Area School District and $10,500,000 for  housing.”

The City of Windom’s Appeal and Equalization meeting will be on Tuesday, May 9th starting at 4:30 in the City Council Chambers. This is open to the public for anyone that would like to dispute their property taxes within the City of Windom. County staff will be on hand as well at the meeting. The Council asks that you please be prepared with your address and parcel number when discussing your property.
