The Redwood County Sheriff’s Office reported on the 8th at approximately 11:28am their office was advised that the Brown County Sheriff’s Office was in pursuit of a vehicle that was believed to be entering Redwood County shortly. Redwood County deputies responded to the area where the vehicle was last seen but were unable to locate the vehicle. At approximately 12:20, Redwood County deputies located the suspect vehicle at a farm site in rural Clements and after an extended search of the area, deputies located one male individual laying out in a field, who was apprehended and brought into custody. The Redwood County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the search by the Minnesota State Patrol.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reported on the 8th in the morning Deputies responded to a report of shoplifting at Sunshine Foods. And then in the late afternoon they received a report of individuals trespassing/squatting in an apartment hallway at night in Jackson.

The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners met on the 7th. The Board moved to give an employee a Notice of Suspension and Directives to be effective December 8, 2022. The Board moved to adopt 3 separate Resolutions for Agency Agreement with MnDOT contracts and adopted Resolution Approving Guidelines and Renewal of Participation in Cottonwood County Home Initiative Program.” The Commissioners then approved Amendment 3 of the Joint Powers Agreement for A.C.E. of Southwest Minnesota. The board accepted and all resignations with appropriate payout of benefits and agreed that the vacant HEO Position and a part-time legal secretary position would be posted internally and externally. There was no action taken on the Easement Agreement with Summit Carbon Solutions, but discussion was held regarding holding an open, public meeting to be held after the new year. A Truth and Taxation Meeting was held.

Federated Rural Electric, Jackson,  will be awarding two $1,000 scholarships to Federated members’ students. This scholarship is in its 16th year. Scott Reimer, Federated’s general manager, stated  “This scholarship comes from Basin Electric Power Cooperative based in Bismarck, North Dakota, which became a wholesale power supplier for Federated in 2008 and L&O Power Cooperative in Rock Rapids, Iowa,” Reimer went onto say “Basin awards 137 of these scholarships to local electric cooperatives. Federated is excited to distribute the scholarship materials and select local students to receive the two $1,000 scholarships.” The deadline to apply for this scholarship is January 27, 2023. Applications are available from Federated’s website www.federatedrea.coop , at Federated’s office 507-847-3520 or info@federatedrea.coop or from local high school counselors.

The scholarships are available to high school seniors and college students who will be enrolled fulltime in an accredited two-year or four-year college, university or vocational/technical school working on an undergraduate or master’s degree. Previous Federated-Basin scholarship winners are not eligible to apply again. Applicants must be 25 and under and a U.S. citizen.

Applicants must complete a two-page application, including a grades’ transcript, ACT/SAT scores (optional), write an essay and have an outside appraisal (reference checklist). The one-page essay should address: What challenges face rural electric cooperatives in the coming years and how do you think challenges should be addressed?

The scholarship must be used for college during Fall 2023. Checks will be made payable to the school as paid by Basin/L&O. Scholarships will be distributed in August.

Last year’s Basin scholarship winners were Tanner Sinn, Trimont; and Meta Tewes, Jackson.

In addition, keep in mind the Federated Rural Electric Operation Round Up scholarship applications will go out with the February electric bills; nine scholarships of $700 will be awarded locally.

Federated is a Touchstone Energy Cooperative serving 6,800 members in Jackson and Martin Counties.
