Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reported 45 calls from September 7th to September 13th. Deputies responded to several domestic disturbances, welfare checks, medical assists, alarms, traffic-related incidents and reports of harassment during the week. Among the calls, two people were arrested for DUI following a report of an erratic driver on Interstate 90. Deputies also investigated a car-versus-cow crash, a burglary and theft at a storage unit, and garbage dumped in and along the Des Moines River near Petersburg. Other incidents included the arrest of a Jackson man for an alleged Domestic Abuse No Contact Order violation, and a separate arrest of a 47-year-old Jackson man for alleged terroristic threats as part of an investigation with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Deputies also responded to a report of a suspicious man possibly carrying a pistol at the Jackson dog park; the object was determined to be an air gun. The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners met Tuesday. Commissioners set Cottonwood County’s preliminary property tax levy for 2027 at $15,391,893. The preliminary levy represents a 6-percent increase over 2026. The levy can be lowered before final adoption but cannot be increased above the preliminary amount. The Board also approved moving the county’s employee health insurance from a fully insured Blue Cross Blue Shield plan to a self-insured plan through the Minnesota Public Sector Collaborative beginning January 1st, 2027. Commissioners adopted a resolution formally joining the collaborative. In other action, the Board called for a public hearing on a proposed tax abatement for a new residential project at 50120 County Road 51 in Bingham Lake. Commissioners also authorized the sale of Lots 10, 11 and 12 of the Fairgrounds Rearrangement Plat to the Cottonwood Agricultural Society for $10,200. During the meeting, Chairman Tom Appel introduced newly hired Veterans Service Officer Dan Axford. The Board also approved the promotion of Jason Jepsen to Appraiser-CMA, effective September 21st. Additional action included approving a 2027 SafeAssure contract for just over $10,350, adopting an agreement for the Toward Zero Deaths program, approving an updated payroll policy and approving September warrants totaling $424,766.47.

The Windom Police Department continues to work toward a long-term solution for housing stray and impounded animals. At the August 18th Windom City Council meeting, Police Chief Scott Peterson and Assistant Police Chief Devin Kopperud informed the council that the Cottonwood County Vet Clinic was no longer providing animal impound services. That left the department without a regular location to house stray animals. During Tuesday’s Council meeting, Kopperud provided an update, saying the Police Department and Mayor Hilary Mathis have continued exploring options. Kopperud said some short-term possibilities have been identified, but nothing has been implemented at this time. He said finding a permanent solution will take time, with the goal of addressing the needs of both residents and the animals. Mathis said the lack of an impound facility needs to remain at the forefront, noting that dogs are the primary concern. She said there have been several conversations regarding the issue and, while there may be a potential short-term solution, a long-term option still needs to be worked out. KDOM reached out to Cottonwood Veterinary Clinic to learn more about its decision to discontinue animal impound services and will provide additional information from the clinic if it becomes available. In the meantime, the City and Windom Police Department say they continue to actively work toward both a short-term and permanent solution for animal impound services.

Ummmm…. I am bound and determined to get up on my soapbox today and honestly, I don’t really want too… BUT I just feel a need… WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON in our beautiful Nation, Region, State, City and neighborhoods. Today is National Respect Day… I think we need this to be an everyday thing, not just once a year. The crazy is alive and well and it appears that we need a dose of sanity. The rudeness, gossip, the lack of connection or ability to just be able to have an honest conversation seems to be out the window… Let’s all practice today and BE RESPECTFUL!!!! Let’s do it over a Cheeseburger! Windom McDonalds and Mt Lake A & W are serving them up all hot and juicy!!! YES!!! Today is National Cheeseburger Day… You know you want to celebrate. AND for dessert??? It is National Rice Krispie Treat Day!!! Come to the Station and grab one from Joe.. He is looking forward to being polite and respectful and brightening your day in celebration of the oooey gooey crispy treat… There is no shame in eating them for breakfast then for a snack and then compliment your lunch or dinner of a cheeseburger with a rice crispy treat..
