Cottonwood County Sheriff Jason Purrington put out a Press Release on the 23rd regarding a Farm Accident. According to the release, on July 14th at 1:17pm Cottonwood County Dispatch received a 911 call referencing a tractor roll over in section 19 of Midway Township. The caller stated he was cutting hay and the tractor rolled over on him and he was able to get out from under the tractor. First Responders were sent to the scene and made contact with the victim Steve Penner and provided aid. An Air Ambulance was dispatched to the scene and upon arrival Penner was transported to Sanford in Sioux Falls. Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Mountain Lake Police Department, Mountain Lake Fire Department, Mountain Lake Ambulance and North Memorial Air Care.

Cottonwood County Commissioners approved several personnel changes and infrastructure-related items during their regular meeting Tuesday. Commissioners accepted the resignation of Veterans Service Officer Mitchell Chmielewski, effective August 6th, and approved beginning the search for his replacement. The board also approved hiring Noah Boerboom as the new Cottonwood County Public Works Director. Boerboom will begin his position August 31st. In the meantime, commissioners approved an employment agreement with Stephen Schnieder to serve as interim county engineer for the Public Works Department beginning August 18th through the end of the year, unless extended or ended earlier by mutual agreement. In other business, commissioners supported MnDOT’s planned safety improvements at the intersection of Highway 62 and County State Aid Highway 5 and approved an interim use permit for Duininck Incorporated to operate an asphalt plant in Amboy Township, with conditions recommended by the County Planning and Zoning Commission. Commissioners approved the sale of a 2017 Massey Ferguson tractor to Midway Farm Equipment for $25,000 and approved continued seasonal tractor rentals, including an additional tractor, for ditch mowing operations and concluded the meeting by approving July warrants in the amount of $165,168.16.

The Windom Public Library is seeing strong participation in its summer programs, including a new seed library that has already proven popular with the community. Windom Public Librarian Kari Hanson provided an update to the Windom City Council Tuesday night, sharing that the Friends of the Windom Library’s seed library has distributed more than 200 packets of seeds since it was launched this summer. Hanson said the seed library was created as part of the library’s summer reading program theme, “Plant a Seed, Read,” and plans are to continue offering the program in future years as interest continues to grow. The library’s summer reading program has also been a success, with more than 200 children signed up this year. Hanson said the goal is not only to reward kids for participating but to encourage them to continue returning to the library throughout the summer. The library has also offered special programming, including a recent storytelling event at the Cottonwood County Historical Society. The “Wonder Weavers” program, called “Digging to China,” encouraged children to use their imagination while also giving them opportunities to participate in storytelling and public speaking. Hanson said that program was made possible through a Legacy Arts Grant, allowing the library to provide additional activities for local children.

Ondalay! Ondalay! It’s National Tequila Day! If you didn’t know, today is one of the most widely recognized food and observance days on the calendar. Now, I’ll admit… I’ve always enjoyed songs about tequila, but I’m not necessarily a huge fan of the drink itself. Although, that opinion may go all the way back to my college learning days and I’m sure a few listeners can relate! But July 24th is about more than just tequila. It’s also National Amelia Earhart Day, honoring the birthday of one of the most inspiring women in history. Amelia Earhart was born on July 24th, 1897, and became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, proving that determination, courage, and a willingness to challenge expectations can take you farther than anyone imagined. I often wonder if young girls today are still learning about the brave and incredible women who pushed beyond boundaries and opened doors for future generations. Women who dared to dream bigger, go farther, and show the world what was possible. I sure hope they are. And finally, today is also National Cousins Day, a perfect reminder to reach out to those first friends many of us ever had. Cousins are such a unique combination of family, friendship, shared memories, and a little bit of mystery in the DNA mix. They’re the people who know where you came from, remember the stories you may have forgotten, and often hold a special place in your life. I have to end celebrating National Tell an Old Joke Day… It’s a classic and I remember my granddaddy telling me AND also just heard it from my grandson this past week…”Why did the chicken cross the road?” You KNOW THE ANSWER… To get to the other side!!! and if that doesn’t bring back memories how about Why don’t eggs tell jokes?
