The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department reported 35 calls from July 13th to July 18th. Deputies responded to a Domestic Abuse No Contact Order , 2- Disturbance calls in Jackson, 4-Tresspass Calls, a Domestic Disturbance in Jackson, an Assault in the jail between inmates and a Disturbance in Heron Lake. The Heron Lake Fire Department and deputies responded to a report of a diesel leak from a straight truck at the Expressway gas station in Heron Lake. Deputies assisted Worthington Police Department, Jackson Ambulance, a Motorist, Iowa Law Enforcement Agency, and the MN State Patrol. Deputies conducted several traffic stops and 2 Welfare Checks. Windom Police Department reported a hit and run on the 16th at Circle K at 1pm. The driver was later located and charges are pending on a 70-year-old female from Windom for Failure to Notify Owner/Police of Traffic Collision. An injury accident occurred at the intersection of 4th Avenue and 12th Street. According to the report a 2004 Toyota Sequoia was traveling westbound on 12th Street when his brakes went out while approaching the stop sign. The vehicle went through the stop sign and T-Boned the right side of a 2024 Chevy Traverse then continued on jumping a curb and collided with city owned stop sign, knocking it over. Bother vehicles received severe disabling damage and were towed from the scene. Three people were transported to Windom Hospital. The Windom Fire Department and Ambulance assisted at the scene.

The Windom City Council approved two airport-related items Tuesday night aimed at keeping future improvement projects on schedule. Council members approved transferring, or “loaning,” $60,000 in Federal Aviation Administration airport entitlement funds to the Granite Falls Municipal Airport. Windom receives about $150,000 annually in federal entitlement funding for airport capital improvements, but those dollars must be used within a set timeframe or they are returned to the federal government. Windom City Administrator Steve Nasby, explained that because Windom’s planned crosswind runway project has been delayed until taxiway pavement improvements are completed, the city has excess entitlement funds available. Rather than risk losing those dollars, the funds will be loaned to Granite Falls for its current airport project and repaid to Windom during the 2027 federal fiscal year. Nasby noted Windom has benefited from similar transfers from other airports on previous projects. The council also approved a Letter of Agreement with MnDOT Aviation for the airport’s Automated Weather Observing System, or AWOS. The agreement covers relocating the weather station to comply with the airport’s updated layout plan. The relocation project is fully funded by MnDOT Aviation, while the City of Windom will continue maintaining the area surrounding the equipment, including vegetation control and year-round access. MnDOT will remain responsible for owning, operating, and maintaining the weather observation equipment itself.

A free public event about wind energy is coming to Storden next week. Clean Grid Alliance is hosting a “Wind 101” informational meeting and free dinner on Monday, July 27th, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Storden American Legion. According to organizers, the event will feature presentations from a wind energy expert, a local wind landowner, and a county commissioner. Topics will include how wind energy projects work, what communities should know about them, and the potential local economic benefits. The evening will wrap up with a question-and-answer session.
