University of Minnesota Extension’s Strategic Farming: Field Notes webinar series continues to provide Minnesota farmers with timely, research-based crop production information throughout the growing season. The free webinars are held every Wednesday morning from 8 to 8:30 a.m. During the June 3 session, forage specialist Dr. Beatriz Bizzuti encouraged producers to check alfalfa fields for winter injury, stem density and pests as first-cut harvest begins. She also warned producers to scout for alfalfa weevil, which has been reported in parts of the state. Extension educator Troy Salzer discussed pasture productivity, noting winter injury has reduced forage growth in some areas and stressing the importance of rotational grazing and rest periods to improve pasture health. The webinar also featured educator Tim Gieseke, who discussed precisiondrainage, a site-specific approach aimed at improving field drainage and creating more uniform growing conditions. The Strategic Farming: Field Notes webinars are supported by the Minnesota Soybean Research & Promotion Council and the Minnesota Corn Research & Promotion Council. Past sessions are available online and through podcast platforms.
