I’d like to take a moment to respectfully acknowledge that today is POW/MIA Recognition Day. The 3rd Friday of September is a date set to recommit to full accountability to the families of captured service members and missing war heroes. POW stands for Prisoner of War and MIA means military personnel who went Missing in Action. This Day of Recognition was initiated as the day to commemorate with the family of many of the tens of thousands of service members who never made it home. The day was first observed in 1979 after Congress and the president passed a resolution to make it official following the demands of the families of 2,500 Vietnam War POW/MIAs who asked for accountability in finding their loved ones. Regardless of where they are held in the country, National POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremonies share the common purpose of honoring those who were held captive and returned, as well as the memory of those who remain missing in service to the United States. With all that is going on in our world today take a moment today and give thanks for all of our POW’s and those that still remain MIA. Thank you for your service and dedication.

At the Windom City Council on the 16th, the Council heard a presentation from Johnson Engineering Group on the long-running flooding issues along 18th Avenue and Red Leaf Court. Three representatives presented findings from a detailed feasibility study on storm sewer improvements. The study evaluated past flooding problems and outlined three possible options to help reduce future flooding.

  • Option 1 would install a 36-inch storm sewer on the west side of 18th Avenue, add a dike near Great Bend Boulevard, and reroute storm sewers from Red Leaf Court. The estimated cost of this option is $508,000.
  • Option 2 would be similar, but with a larger 54-inch storm sewer on the west side of 18th Avenue. This plan carries a higher price tag of about $614,000.
  • Option 3 would add the dike and make adjustments to existing culverts while keeping the Red Leaf Court storm sewers connected to the east side system. This lower-cost option is estimated at $88,000.

Council members also raised questions about the new county building and the additional runoff created by its construction. After discussion, the council opted for Option 3, which will include culverts running to the south. While there may still be some possibility of flooding, it is expected to be controllable. The council then passed a resolution ratifying the feasibility study and calling for a public hearing on the project.

It’s National Overthinkers Day it is a day that was made just for me I believe… I overthink everything from what to say and how to say it, to what needs to be done and how it should be done and why it should be done. My thinker just barely ever turns off… I mean right this moment as I am speaking I am still trying to figure out how in the world National Meow like a Pirate Day EVER came into existence… I truly think I need another vacation to figure this out. I am extremely grateful for the time off that Steve and I finally took after a 7-year hiatus of no vacation… We actually did unhook, unplugged and un-winded… I appreciate the Grace and Understanding for the end of last week when circumstances beyond our control unfolded and knocked us off the air for a bit. We appreciate Zach and Shar holding down the fort and trudging forward like warriors! The dream is alive of rested minds and souls as I think on how, where and when I can make it happen again!!!
