It was a beautiful evening of remembrance, celebration, and community support on Friday, June 27th, as Windom came together for the annual Striking Out Cancer event held once again at Island Park. According to coordinator Mary Theesfeld, this year’s event was a heartfelt success. The Windom Pirates notched a win on the field, while the community scored a major victory in the fight against cancer, raising $11,941.75 for the American Cancer Society. Thirty cancer survivors were honored during the evening, with over 320 luminaria bags lighting a pathway of hope. The word HOPE itself glowed brightly, reminding everyone of the importance of never giving up the fight to find a cure. According to Theesfeld, the community showed strong support with 145 people enjoying the meal, dozens more bought t-shirts, drawing tickets, or luminaria bags, and many treated themselves to root beer floats from A&W or made purchases at Scooters, with proceeds supporting the cause. The evening was filled with family fun too, thanks to kids’ games organized by Halle Jackson, Hadley Sammons, and Eli Rothenberger, and appearances by Rooty Bear and the Windom Pirates, adding energy and excitement to the park. Theesfeld on behalf of the committee expressed deep gratitude to sponsors, donors, and volunteers especially Dave Fjeld, Mike Jackson, Jim and Joni Garrison, and everyone who helped with setup, teardown, and running event stations. Theesfeld stated while the planning team may be small, their message is big: if you have a passion for curing cancer, they welcome your help for next year’s event.

It’s been a recovery week… I had a blast with all my grandkids this past week. How fortunate are people that live so close to their littles! It is a dream that I hope becomes a reality before they grow too big! I am reminiscing because I see that today is National Merry-Go-Round Day. It was just last weekend that we were twirling around and around and around on the Giraffe, Zebra, Eagle and Horse. Oh the memories!!! It is also one of my favorite National Days because today is talk in an Elevator Day… Yep it is hilarious when you get in an elevator, and everyone is PRETENDING that you aren’t in the same little box going up or down. I LOVE starting conversations in the elevator! It is as awkward as anything, but it is hilarious! Try it… It’s International Red Shoes Day too… I WISH I still had my old red converse high tops… FAVORITE pair of shoes EVER!!!
