Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office reported 31 calls in the week of February 23rd to March 1st. Jackson County Sheriff’s Department reported 20 Calls from February 27thth to March 2nd . Deputies responded to a report of loud music at an apartment complex in Jackson that led to an arrest. The Heron Lake Fire Dept was paged to a grass fire along the RR tracks about 1 mile west of Heron Lake.  The Okabena Fire Dept was also paged for mutual aid.  Crews were on scene for about 5.5 hours.  A stretch of CR 9 between Heron Lake and Okabena was temporarily closed while they tended to the fire.  About 150 acres of MN DNR land was burned. Deputies also responded to a report of a suspicious person in Heron Lake Township. Upon investigation, a 42-year-old male from Lake Park Iowa was arrested for providing false name. After further investigation, it was found his real identity was Christopher McNab and he was wanted by the Windom Police Department for 3rd Degree Criminal Sexual Assault. He was turned over to the Cottonwood County Jail. The Lakefield Fire Department was paged to a grass fire southwest of Lakefield.  Crews were on scene for about 20 minutes and then the Lakefield and Okabena Fire Departments were paged to a ditch fire west of Lakefield.  Crews were on scene for about 10 minutes. Meetings today include:

  • Murray County Board of Commissioners will be meeting at 8:30am in the Murray County Government Center. If you would like to listen in by calling or view the meeting via zoom you can find the information on the Murray County Homepage.
  • Jackson County Board of Commissioners and the Drainage Authority will meet at 9am at the Jackson County Court House Commissioners Board Room
  • The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners will be meeting at 9:00am at the Cottonwood County Courthouse in the Commissioners Room.
  • The St James City Council will be meeting on at 5:30pm in James City Hall in Council Chambers. Meetings can be viewed live or anytime on the City of St James’s YouTube Channel.
  • The Windom City Council will meet at 6:30 pm at Windom City Hall in City Council Chambers. Meetings can be viewed live or anytime on the City of Windom’s YouTube Channel.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources invites people interested in wildlife and outdoor skills to check out the spring program schedule for the Minnesota Outdoor Skills and Stewardship webinar series.

Next up on Wednesday, March 5, Emilie Justen, a noxious plant expert with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, will discuss poison ivy and a few other plants that can make a day out in nature unpleasant if people encounter them. Justen will share how to identify and avoid these plants and things to know about controlling or managing them.

Then, on Wednesday, March 12, Minnesota DNR safety program staff will talk ticks. Minnesota is home to 13 different tick species, but three species are of concern for transmitting tick-borne illnesses. Staff will discuss the blacklegged, American dog and Lone Star ticks and the tick-borne illnesses they have the potential to transmit. Staff will also discuss different prevention methods and strategies to minimize risk of tick bites throughout the year.
