John Weir

John William Weir age 81, of Mountain Lake, MN died on September 27, 2024, at Windom Area Hospital.

Visitation will be on Thursday, October 3, 2024 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Sturm Funeral Home, Mountain Lake Chapel and will continue on Friday from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom, MN. Mass will be held at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church on Friday at 11:00 am. The clergy will be Father Antony Aroklyam. Interment will be at the Mountain Lake City Cemetery in Mountain Lake, Minnesota.

John was born June 11, 1943, in Cokato, MN. He was the son of Lucille (Anderson) and Lawrence Weir. He attended Cokato Public Schools graduating in 1961. He went on to St Cloud State University and graduated in 1966 with a degree in Health and Physical Education. In the fall of 1966, he began his teaching and coaching career in Mountain Lake. In 1968 he was drafted into the United States Army and served until 1970.

After serving in the military he returned to his teaching position in Mountain Lake where he taught until 2009. After retiring from teaching and coaching, he worked for the Minnesota State High School League as a coordinator for Section 3 for 15 years. During this time, he helped coordinate tournaments in all activities, by securing sites, hiring officials, and presenting awards.

On December 28, 1970, John married Patricia Brovold at St Catherine Catholic Church in Valley City, ND. They had two children, a daughter, Heather and son, Jay.

John was a life member of the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association, Minnesota Athletic Directors Association, named several times as a subsection and Section\Track Coach of the Year and in 1985 was named Minnesota Coach of the Year. He also served as Chairman of the Red Rock Athletic Conference for 10 years. John was a Charter Member of the Mountain Lake Lions Club as well as a Charter Member of the Mountain Lake Golf Course. He was also inducted into the Mountain Lake Athletic Hall of Fame. John served as a church usher, church trustee and council member.

He loved golf, the Gophers, the Twins, and especially his grandchildren and watching them in all their activities.

John is survived by his wife, Pat, daughter Heather (Ross) Webskowski and their children Dayton and Zander, of Marshall, son Jay (Nicole) Weir and their daughter Kinsley of Blaine, brothers Dennis (Cathy) Weir of Debary, FL, and Terry (Mick)Weir of Eden Prairie, brother in laws Robert Brovold of Kulm, ND, Gary (Sally) Brovold of Bismarck, ND, Ron (Kris) Brovold of Fargo, ND, and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Lucille Weir, mother-in-law and father-in-law Lorrell and Warren Brovold, brother and sister-in-law Bob and Jan Weir and sister-in-law Barb Brovold and nephew Travis Brovold.
