The Jackson County Sheriffs Office reported on the 4th a resident of Jackson reported a scam involving a caller claiming to be a third-party collection agency who demanded $2,000. Deputies located and arrested a 25-year-old male from Jackson on two Dickinson County warrants:  1) Willful Injury and False Imprisonment 2) Public Intoxication. The male was released after posting $6,000 bail. Dispatch transferred a 911 driving complaint call to the MN State Patrol on a vehicle travelling west on MN 60 near Heron Lake and a deputy conducted a traffic stop in Lakefield.  As a result, the driver was issued a citation for Driving After Revocation.

The first snow of the year fell this past weekend and there definitely will be more coming our way. Remember to tune into KDOM for closings, cancellations, and severe weather updates. Also remember that if a snow emergency is declared all vehicles must be off the street until the weather has passed and the roads are plowed curb to curb. Any vehicles left on the streets can be ticketed and/or towed.

Mountain Lake City Council met on the 3rd. Police Assistant Police Chief Louis Norell requested to purchase and budget for body cameras, before Council decides, a public hearing will be held. The City Council unanimously agreed for the police to continue to research body cameras, costs, and to set up a public hearing at the City Council meeting on February 5th. The city administrator is still working to get specs and costs for EPS, Bulter Steel, and Lester Buildings on estimated costs and specs for the Fire & Ambulance Hall. The city administrator will continue to research building materials, costs, and financing options. Mayor Nelson provided an update at the council meeting of new appointments and commissions.  The Council approved the 2024 Designations and Appointments. Rates, fees, and administrative fines were discussed and reviewed. The 2024 water, sewer, and electric rates were already approved. The 2023 building permit summary and seniority list were reviewed. An update was given to the council regarding civil processes on various properties, public nuisances, current processes, court procedures, agreements, and plans by the City Attorney. City Administrator MnDOT Advisory Panel was discussed. MnDOT is reviewing Mountain Lake’s highway 60 corridors. Mayor Nelson will participate in the Advisory Panel. An update was given to the council regarding board and commission meetings.

The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners will hold a work session on Tuesday January 9th at 9am at the Cottonwood County Law Enforcement Center to discuss the Landfill.

There will be a Snowmobile Safety Day Saturday February 17th at 10am in Tracy with instructor Steven Rykhus.  Participants to be eligible are required to be 11 years of age before February 17th and have completed the online course. To register for the class the following information must be e-mailed to the instructor- Students Name, Date of Birth, Town in which student lives, Both Parents names and contact cell numbers. This class fills fast so it is recommended to register early. There will be no walk-ins allowed. Students must have their own riding clothes and DOT helmet. You may bring your own snowmobile but please let the instructor know that you are bringing your own snowmobile.
