A fire claimed the St James Golf Course Club House and River’s Edge Grill Saturday night at approximately 11:45pm. According to Fire Chief Bill Nelson the fire had a good jump on them as it was vented out of the roof upon arrival. They were called back for a flair up shortly before 8am on Sunday which was quickly contained and extinguished. Assisting the St James Fire Department, with their water tankers were Madelia, Lewisville, Odin, Ormsby and Truman. Nelson stated that the fire crew was on scene for approximately 7 hours. Nelson went onto say the State Fire Marshall is currently investigating the cause of the fire. The Course itself was not damaged and will remain open using a temporary office.

Thursday the 10th at approximately 7:30pm a criminal complaint says a call came from a Jackson Apartment building stating that a 23-year-old male from Westbrook had allegedly come to the home and pulled a knife after being denied access to a child belonging to his girlfriend and the victim. The knife was then knocked away and the defendant kicked it out of the apartment before he was able to regain access, allegedly punching the victim as well as hitting with a pan. The Westbrook male has been charged with second degree assault and if convicted, could face up to seven years in jail.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reported on the 11th, at approximately A deputy responded to a report of an abandoned vehicle that had burned near the intersection of 570th St. and 910th Ave. in Kimball Township. A Chevy Impala was found on the roadway completely destroyed by fire. All identifying information on the vehicle including license plates and VIN was destroyed beyond recognition. Deputies are continuing to investigate and determine if the vehicle was stolen. On the 12th a deputy responded to a report of a transient at the Econo Lodge in Jackson. Deputies conducted Boat and Water patrol on area lakes and picked up and disposed properly a large amount of trash on Clear Lake Beach. The Heron Lake Fire Department responded to a hay field fire Northwest of Heron Lake. The Okabena Fire Department was paged for mutual aid. Crews were on scene for about 45 minutes. Deputies helped 5 kayakers after a report of suspicious people in Christiania Township. The Kayakers were looking for help to get back to Kilen Woods to their vehicle due to not being able to reach their destination before darkness set in. Deputies also responded to a driving complaint at Robertson Park. A vehicle was reported to be driving carelessly in the park. The vehicle was located in the park but was unoccupied and no one was found in the area of the vehicle.

Mountain Lake Public Schools are gearing up for another successful school year. Superintendent Bill Strom stated that Athletic practices have started and they had a good turnout for Athletic Orientation on the 7th. The first day of school is September 5thand teachers start on the 28th with workshop trainings to the 31st. Strom said they are expecting about 500 students for the new school year. Strom expressed his excitement with a partnership with Greater Minnesota Family Services. According to Strom, they will provide schools with therapist services to help students chart a positive path through challenging situations, their focus is on mental health for county and schools. There became an increasing need for these services during Covid and throughout the recovery process of overcoming the apathy of students. Strom stated that he looks forward to seeing the progression through Ashley Schroeder who will be the Mt Lake Public Schools Therapist. There will be an operating referendum on November 7th. Strom wanted to remind the public that there are 4 seats open on the School Board. If you are interested in running for a seat, you need to register to get on the ballot by August 15th at 5pm in the Mt Lake School District Office.
