Application deadlines for special State Park Youth Deer hunts is August 18th. Hunters aged 12 to 15 can apply. Several state parks in Southwest Minnesota will again be hosting youth firearms deer hunts. Camden, Blue Mounds, Lake Shetek, Kilen Woods, and Sibley State Parks will all host hunts this fall. These hunts are for successful applicants only. Interested youth hunters must apply for a special lottery by Aug. 18 at any ELS license vendor, or online at http://mndnr.gov/buyalicense According to Camden State Park Supervisor, “Too many of one animal or plant species in an area can start to throw off the balance of other species in that area, and when there are too many deer in a park, they feed too much on certain trees and native plants, so occasionally we allow deer hunts as a way to protect natural resources and bring the deer population back into better balance.”

For a list of all state parks and recreation areas that are hosting special hunts, visit the DNR website.  https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/hunting/deer/special-deer-hunts.html  contact the DNR Information Center at info.dnr@state.mn.us  or call 888-646-6367 (Mon-Fri: 8am-6pm, Sat: 8am-4:30pm).

Did you know that today in 1992 the Mall of America officially opened with 330 stores. It still remains as the largest shopping mall in the United States. I totally remember my first experience at the Mall of America we took the boys and were totally overwhelmed with all the stuff to do. BUT we did hit Lego world, the Walt Disney Shop, we found the Chapel, bought goodies at the candy stores and had an absolute ball at Camp Snoopy. The souvenirs from that trip remained on my guys’ shelves until we took them down to move… Today is also National Sons and Daughters Day. Facebook would have you believe that they are two separate days but according to my research, it is one day to celebrate your children- male or female… BUT I still don’t understand why because EVERY DAY you should be telling your kids how absolutely wonderful and proud you are to be their parent! That’s my opinion and I am sticking to it… I had to laugh when I saw that today is National Presidential Joke Day. We have gotten to a point in life that no one can really joke around because of being politically correct and not hurting someones feelings just because they don’t agree… THEN I saw it and thought, ode to go back to the “good old days”… BACK in 1984 President Ronald Regan joked during a sound check that he has “Signed legislation that would outlaw Russia forever… We begin bombing in five minutes..” YEP that was a classic… Couldn’t do that today in 2023 BUT Today is Presidential Joke Day so officially it should be okay that I shared. If you want to find me to give me an earful.. I’ll be at Cottonwood Lake with my feet in the sand and my bucket by my side celebrating National Play in the Sand Day today…
