The 4H activities and exhibits are in full swing today at the Cottonwood County Fair. If the opportunity to see all the hard work local 4-Hers have put in preparing for the fair isn’t enough reason to stop by, the 4-H food stand is! Its open all day today starting at 7:30am AND don’t forget they have a delivery option this year. Crystal Reath, the Cottonwood County 4-H coordinator is keeping us updated on the schedule of events for tomorrow.

The Cottonwood County Commissioners met on Tuesday in a special meeting. Commissioners set a Public Hearing date for August 29th at 8am regarding the request for a tax abatement from the City of Mt Lake for the Mt Lake Hotel Project. They approved the Schematic Design Plan for the new proposed Public Works Facility and held a discussion on 2024 Budgets. A motion was passed stating that all building expenses on the new Public Works Facility will be paid and processed as currently done with other Public Works expenses out of the Road and Bridge account by Public Works staff. All pre-construction costs including engineering, management and land costs will be funded by Road and Bridge cash balance, and will not be reimbursed from the county building fund.

The Mountain Lake City Council met on Monday. The council approved surplus equipment of a 1989 Ford L8000/Dump Truck and approved the variance in the Commercial Park which there were no public comments. The City Attorney gave an update to the Council regarding civil processes on various properties, public nuisances, current processes, court procedures, agreements and plans. City Administrator, Michael Muller, reported on 2023 Second Quarter Revenues and Expenses. According to Muller, in past years, revenues that exceed budgeted amounts are saved to make large equipment purchases as needed. The city has spent over $630,000 in their savings this year on large equipment purchases, which will be beyond the expenditures planned in the 2023 budget. The council reviewed the preliminary 2024 levy and budget. No action was taken regarding the 2024 levy and budget.

Two male suspects are now in custody after leading multiple law enforcement agencies on a pursuit yesterday. At approximately 10:09am on Tuesday August 8th, Murray County Dispatch was notified of a pursuit of a stolen vehicle from the City of Rochester that started with Worthington Police Department. The pursuit was northbound on HWY 59 heading toward Slayton. Murray County Deputies joined the pursuit south of Avoca. Spike strips were used successfully south of Slayton near Memorial Gardens Cemetery, but the pursuit continued north on HWY 59 to the intersection of HWY 30 near Pete’s Corner where the suspect attempted to make a right turn and struck another vehicle stopped at the stop sign. The two suspects fled the scene into a nearby cornfield. Deputies and responding officers set up a perimeter around the cornfield to apprehend the suspects. Several homeowners in the area were notified of the incident and were advised to remain indoors and away from the cornfield for a short time. Within approximately an hour and half the two males were in custody. Responding agencies include the Murray County Sheriff’s Office; Slayton Police Department; Buffalo Ridge Drug and Violent Crime Task Force; Worthington Police Department; Nobels County Sheriff’s Officer; Pipestone County Sheriff’s Office; Lyon County Sheriff’s Office; Minnesota State Patrol; Minnesota Department of Natural Resources; City of Marshall Emergency Management; Marshall Police Department and the Murray County Ambulance.

Windom Police Department reported on the 8th at approximately 1:30am an officer while sitting in the Vet Clinic parking lot observed a vehicle traveling eastbound on Highway 60 with a headlight out. After initiating a traffic stop and investigating, a 25-year-old male faces charges for Driving While Intoxicated pending results of the BCA urine test.
