Windom Area Health gave an update on their 5-year strategic plan during the Windom City Council meeting on Tuesday. Their mission as part of this 5-year strategic plan is for Windom Area Health to provide services that not only satisfy the needs of the Windom community, but also surrounding communities, and to remain an independent hospital. Windom Area Health CEO Shelby Medina said the hospital is at that point where they are ready to take that next step…

Medina said that next step includes a new medical office building that she believes can be a medical hub for the Windom and surrounding areas that will continue to build upon the services they already provide, but also add services they currently don’t have.

Windom Area Health Chief Financial officer John Peyerl gave financial information on the new medical office building…

Peyerl says one financial option is getting a USDA loan, which is their preferred route, but Peyerl notes USDA loans have strict requirements they must follow and meet. Another financing option is securing a bond through another institution like a city bond, but Peyerl emphasizes that doesn’t mean the city of Windom or Windom residents would pay for the facility, Windom Area Health would fully fund it with revenues from the hospital.


Blue Heron Days in Heron Lake starts today and goes on through Sunday, June 25th. Tonight, they’re showing the movie Clifford the Big Red Dog on the library lawn starting at 9pm. Saturday’s Blue Heron Days events include the car show, kiddie Olympics, food vendors, parade at 2pm, kid’s games, petting zoo, bingo, lucky duck race, and a dance featuring the Jeremy DeWall band. A motion was made during the Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners meeting to designate $240,000 of the ARPA funds for test wells at the landfill and vinyl chloride expenses. The remaining just over 1.58 million dollars of the ARPA funds will be designated for the new Public Works building.


The Windom and Springfield schools are holding the Isaac Fink and Jack Thompson Basketball Camp June 23rd in Windom and June 24th in Springfield. Isaac Fink is a NSIC Overall Champion from Augustana University and Jack Thompson is a two-time NSIC South Champion.

Both locations will have their camps for boys and girls in 3rd – 6th grade from 10am-12pm, boys and girls in grades 7-9 from 1pm-3pm, and a varsity session from 3pm-5pm. During the youth session, participants will work on ball handling, finishing, and shooting, plus fun competitive skills games and small-sided games. The varsity session will focus on skill development & high-level skills training, plus small-sided games.
