Purchasing a home is a big commitment and often the largest financial transaction one will make in their lifetime, and the process can seem overwhelming. June is National Homeownership Month, an excellent opportunity to learn about taking financial control and making owning a home a reality. Lutheran Social Services LSS housing counselors work with individuals and families to help them get their finances in order before buying a home and provide knowledgeable guidance throughout the process, all for free.
According to Nichole Szczesniak, director of Homeownership Services for LSS Financial Counseling, they help people assess their current financial situation which includes income stability, debt to income ratios, credit scores and savings. We discuss whether they are ready to buy, what they can afford, any barriers they may face and what resources are available to them, she went on to say, sometimes, there are special financing or down payment assistance programs new homebuyers may not be aware of, and we discuss whether they qualify for those and their options.
