The Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office reported on the 4th at approximately 5:15 pm deputies responded to a one-vehicle rollover accident on County Road 53. A 59-year-old male from Jeffers was traveling in his 2008 Chevy Impala when he hit a large drift in the roadway and lost control which caused his vehicle to overturn and come to rest on the roof. There were no injuries reported. On the 5th at about 4:45pm dispatch received a 911 text stating, “I need police and ambulance fast to Storden”. Deputies went enroute from Windom. Upon further investigation and speaking with the parties involved, at the Sorenson Street, Storden location, a male party was arrested for misusing 911 to place a fictitious emergency call.

Windom Police Department reported on the 7th at approximately 11am, a 2017 Ford Econoline Transit Bus owned by Community Action was driving through the Windom Casey’s parking lot when it made minor contact with the guard rail causing minor damage.

The Windom Area School District Board of Education will have a strategic planning meeting in the Elementary Library on Thursday February 9th at 7pm. Agenda items include elements of the strategic plan to determine districts vision for the next five years including a state of the school update and an environmental scan.

Southwest Minnesota State University will host Matthew Ness on Tuesday, February 14th from 7-8 p.m. in the William Whipple Gallery for a Valentine’s Day poetry reading.
Matthew Ness is a 2007 graduate of SMSU. His poem “On the Fairview Bottom” was published in South Dakota magazine and he is the author of his master’s thesis paper “Federal Indian Policy, Psychiatric Care, and the Hiawatha Asylum for Insane Indians.”
To celebrate Valentine’s Day, he will be reading poetry and sharing stories. According to Ness, “Poetry is a living act of love that requires no human others to validate or approve of you.” The event is free and open to the public. Pipestone and Murray County Extension Offices & Pipestone County Master Gardeners invite the public to an informational tree program on Monday February 27th at 2pm in the Pipestone County Emergency Management Building located at 811 5th Street SE in Pipestone. The program is focused on common tree diseases, pests and suitable tree species replacement options for southwest Minnesota. Gary will discuss the most common tree issues affecting southwest Minnesota trees, how to recognize and diagnose common diseases and pests (including Emerald Ash Borer), and learn about how drought is impacting our trees and how homeowners can help mitigate drought stress on trees.
