The Windom City Council has four vacancies for the following positions:
Councilmember – At Large
Councilmember – Ward I
Councilmember – Ward II
Councilmember – Ward II (2 year unexpired term)
All offices are a 4-year term with the exception of the Ward II office that was vacated by Jacqueline Schmidt. This position was temporarily filled by appointment until next General Election. According to Denise Nichols, City of Windom Finance Assistant/Deputy City Clerk, The filing period for elective office in the City of Windom shall commence on August 2, 2022, at 8:00 a.m. and end on August 16, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. Affidavit of candidacy papers may be filed at the City Clerk’s Office in the Windom City Hall during normal business hours (Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) during said filing period. The Elections will take place at the November General Election.

- Dennis Esplan has filed as a candidate for City of Windom Councilmember –At Large.
- Scott Benson and James L. Nelson have filed for City of Windom Councilmember Ward II 2-year unexpired term.

Minnesota State Patrol reported an injury accident on Highway 60 and Highway 71 in Windom on Tuesday at approximately 2:40pm. A 2009 Chevy Impala driven by a 17 year old male was traveling southbound toward Highway 60 and Highway 71 intersection when it collided with a 2006 Toyota Sequoia driven by a 63 year old male that was traveling eastbound on Highway 60. It was reported that both the 63 year old male and his 63 year old female passenger were transported to the Windom Area Hospital with what is thought to be non-life threatening injuries. Outside agencies assisting were the Windom Police Department, Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office, and Windom Fire and Rescue.

The Cottonwood County Sheriffs office reported a traffic accident on the 28th where a 17 year old male from Westbrook was driving on County Road 7 in Westbrook and the vehicle had went into the ditch, hit a field approach and exited the ditch and continued south on County Road 7. No injuries were reported. On the 29th Deputies received a phone call from a male party who stated that they lease a property located just south of the intersection of County Road 10 and 290th Ave and have a trail cam video of someone trespassing on their land. On the 30th at approximately 4:20pm a Deputy responded to the Red Rock Dells County Park for possible underage drinking. Deputy spoke with the reporting party and then went to investigate. The Deputy spoke with three juveniles. PBT’s were administered and two of the three juveniles from Iowa were cited for underage consumption of alcohol.

The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday and approved the Grant application request from the City of Mountain Lake for $20,000 Aquatic Invasive Species funds for the weed harvesting project. The Board moved to allow the Planning and Zoning Technician to sign a one-year contract for the two Aquatic Invasive Species billboards in the amount of $890 per month. The Request for Bids for County Wide Residential and Commercial Recycling Services will have a deadline of 1:00 p.m. on September 2, 2022. The Commissioners approved bids for purchase and sale of County Vehicles and approved the Auditor/Treasurer to sign the Joint Powers Agreement for Recount Process between the State of Minnesota/Secretary of State and Cottonwood County.
After discussion the County Commissioners moved to adopt resolution 22-08-02 “Declaring a State of Emergency.” and gave approval for the Board Chair to sign a letter to Governor Walz regarding the June 13th storm damage and also for the July 5th storm damage.
The Board approved all of the transfers of part-time to full-time and full-time to part-time employee requests. After fully discussing the agenda items, the meeting was closed to discuss strategy for upcoming labor negotiations.
